What do penguins and coral reefs have in common? Join data scientist Marji Puotinen from the Australian Institute of Marine Science to find out.

Penguins thrive in the icy waters of the Southern Ocean, while coral reefs are usually found in warm, tropical climates. What could they possibly have in common? And what does this have to do with 1000 women scientists who are heading to Antarctica over 10 years? See amazing footage of Antarctica, check out a huge penguin shaped banner made of 1,246 children’s drawings, try your hand at feeding like a coral and discover connections you may never have considered!

About the Speaker

Marji Puotinen is a data scientist based at the Australian Institute of Marine Science, where she designs field surveys, maps sea-floor habitats and investigates the impacts of tropical cyclones on coral reefs. In her spare time, she runs an educational initiative for kids that asks ‘What do penguins and coral reefs have in common?’ In 2018, she ran a drawing contest for kids that generated a 7 metre by 5 metre banner of drawings mosaicked to form the image of a dabbing penguin.

In January 2019, she ventured to the bottom of the world to explore the Antarctic Peninsula with 80 women scientists as part of the international women’s leadership program Homeward Bound.
